south与southern的区别

主要区别在于词性不同

south是南方、南面，一般作名词，也可做形容词

southern是南方的，一般做形容词，做名词南方人

举个例子如下:

HainanislandisinthesouthernpartofChina.海南岛位于中国的南部。

HainanislandisinthesouthofChina.海南在中国的南部。

1.以上说法没有任何区别，关键是准确把握south/southern的词性。

2.southern只能做形容词，所以它要修饰名词part做定语，构成固定搭配：inthesouthernpartofChina.

但是，绝对不可以说：inthesouthernofChina.

3.south兼有三种词性：名词，形容词和副词。

①做名词时，当然就有固定搭配：inthesouthofChina

②作形容词时，等同于southern，所以以下两种说法都是正确的，即：

inthesouthpartofChina=inthesouthernpartofChina

③做副词时，副词south=in/on/tothesouth（名词）=in/on/tothesouth/southern（形容词）part.

如：GuangdongliesinthesouthofChina.名词

=Guangdongliesinthesouth/southernpartofChina.形容词

=GuangdongliessouthofChina.副词

最后一个例句中的south就是副词，等同于介宾短语。

4.south作为形容词的用法虽然在语法上无误，但是平时很少用到。
